The Cardiology research area of the Institute’s Research Center is dedicated to discovery aimed at preventing and treating cardiovascular diseases. This research area brings together a dynamic community of 94 researchers, 153 research nurses, research professionals, and support staff, as well as 114 graduate students and postdoctoral fellows. Together, they stand out for their exceptional scientific productivity and their significant contribution to advancing knowledge in cardiovascular health.*
In Canada, cardiovascular diseases affect two out of ten individuals in the population aged 20 and over and account for more than 20% of all deaths, making them the country’s second leading cause of mortality. The Institute positions itself as the largest tertiary care center for the treatment of cardiovascular diseases in Canada and as a globally recognized leader in several fields, including metabolic cardiology, valvular heart disease, and cardiovascular imaging. Its close integration with research makes it a model for the transfer of knowledge and technologies into clinical practice. Researchers and clinician-scientists work within endowed chairs, clinical and fundamental research teams, and core laboratories. They rely on a broad range of strategies and tools, including epidemiology, molecular and cellular biology, multidimensional omics approaches, preclinical studies, clinical trials, and evaluative research. In 2024, one of our researchers was ranked among the most influential scientists worldwide in the field of medicine.
